A Look at City Index

City Index has been around for almost four decades, having been founded in 1983 by Chris Hales and Jonathan Sparke. Spread betting started in 1984, and the company’s CFD wing began operating in 2001. In 2005, City Index purchased IFX Group, which included sister companies IFX Markets and Finspreads.com.

This led to City Index setting up offices in Singapore, Shanghai, and Sydney, to better serve its customers in the Asia Pacific region. In 2008, FX Solutions, a major US provider of white-label foreign exchange and retail services, was acquired by City Index. The next year, City Index released City Trading, the first CFD and spread betting trading app for the iPhone.

In 1997, Michael Spencer acquired control of City Index. In November 2014, it was sold to Gain Capital for $118 million.

This marked a milestone in the company’s growth and size. City Index became part of GAIN Capital, which now serves over 250,000 traders worldwide and has customer equity of $3.9 billion. In 2012, City Index created the Trading Academy, a six-week web series to show that anyone can learn how to trade in financial markets with the right training and support.
