The company made major improvements to its identity verification tool – a facial biometrics tool. Now, the deep fake fraud prevention scheme is built into Sumsub’s identity verification system. And has been updated to use the most up-to-date AI technology to ensure maximum security.

Co-founder and CTO of Sumsub, Vyacheslav Zholudev, said:

We noticed the emerging deepfake trend long ago and started building solutions to fight this rapidly evolving type of fraud. As an anti-fraud provider, Sumsub strives to stay ahead of the game. We continuously develop innovative fraud detection solutions to combat the advancing malicious technologies and prevent the potentially high damage to digital platforms, people, and communities. Our new advanced deepfake detector reinforces our core KYC product and commitment to further enhancing the AI-driven technologies built into our anti-fraud solution.

Sumsub’s liveness technology helps detect and block fake attempts to log in or complete a transaction. The system creates a 3D map of the user’s face to make sure users are physically present for authentication. This 3D map is then used for future authorizations.

Businesses that operate online can be targeted by deepfakes, especially those related to fintech, payments, crypto, and gambling. Data from Sumsub shows that deepfake fraud has become increasingly more common. Surpassing other forms of identity fraud such as document printouts.

  • In 2022 Spain had the highest number of deep fake frauds with 49.7%, followed by Great Britain (9.3%) and the U.S. (4.2%).
  • In the first quarter of 2023, Great Britain and Spain were leading with 11.8% and 11.2%, followed by Germany (6.7%) and the Netherlands (4.7%).
  • The U.S. held fifth place with 4.3%. During this same period, deepfakes saw an increase of 4,500% in Canada, 1,200% in the U.S., 407% in Germany, and 392% in the UK.
  • High deep fake fraud rates were also detected in Australia (5.3%), Argentina (5.1%), and China (4.9%) in the last quarter.

Head of AI/ML at Sumsub, Pavel Goldman-Kalaydin, said:

As we face the ever-evolving trends in generative AI and AI-driven fraud, we anticipate AI technologies to develop quickly, and more sophisticated fraud to emerge, affecting even more industries. The use of synthetic fraud is rising at an alarming rate and leading to the rapid spread of misinformation, as recently seen with the fake images of the explosion at the Pentagon, resulting in significant media hype. As AI advances, more tools become available to fraudsters, and Sumsub is here to fight all kinds of synthetic fraud. Our team is working on a solution to detect a large scope of AI-generated fraud beyond deepfakes.
